Education as Lived Experience
Schultz, Randy; Hultsman, John
Education, v132 n3 p568-575 Spr 2012
This brief essay takes up the question of what is meant by education by providing two possible and distinctly different interpretations of the concept. These distinctions are then extended by attempting to demonstrate how one of these interpretations is tied to a contemporary, technologically-based perspective on life in general, while the other interpretation embraces a more traditional and individualistic (if anachronistic) way of being. Finally, it is suggested that the former and more modern idea of education leaves us somewhat impoverished in terms of what it means to be human and what it means to be educated.
