Butcher, James N.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1980
Results indicate that short forms of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory may not be accurate substitutes for the standard form in predicting objective measures of psychopathology. Newmark et al, however, reassert their findings that short forms are indeed accurate substitutes. (Author/BEF)

Levant, Ronald F. – American Journal of Family Therapy, 1980
Reviews early attempts to classify the field of family therapy, including Haley's caricatures, the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry's classification, and others. The new paradigmatic model proposes a classification of the field of family therapy in terms of three therapeutic paradigms: the historical, the structure/process, and the…

Kline, William; And Others – American Mental Health Counselors Association Journal, 1980
Reviews previous research concerning locus of control and irrational beliefs. Presents a study of females in a weight control program, who exhibited no relationships between irrationality and locus of control. Subscales of the Irrational Beliefs Test varied with program success. Use of the Internal External Locus of Control Scale is questioned.…

Hyman, Ruth Bernstein – Measurement and Evaluation in Guidance, 1979
After a brief summary of evidence for the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) as a measure of self-actualization, this article presents such a systematic summary for the inner-direction and time-competence scales; it should prove valuable for decision making. (Author)
Descriptors: Adults, Diagnostic Tests, Research Methodology, Self Actualization

Palmore, Erdman; And Others – Gerontologist, 1980
In a review of studies using the Facts on Aging Quiz (FAQ), group reliability was high, but item reliability was low. Less educated groups were more biased against the elderly. In some ways the revised FAQ supports the Palmore scale, while compensating for its weaknesses. (JAC)

Spence, Janet T.; Helmreich, Robert L. – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1980
The Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) and Personal Attributes Questionnaire (PAQ) largely measure socially desirable instrumental (masculine) and expressive (feminine) traits which have limited relationships with sex role attitudes and behaviors. The literature does suggest that the traits have important implications separate from sex role behaviors.…

Poythress, Norman G., Jr. – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1978
Faschingbauer offered guidelines in selecting MMPI short forms as substitutes for the MMPI. This reviews empirical studies of the clinical validity of MMPI short forms and discusses MMPI-168, not considered in Faschingbauer's earlier article. Empirical evidence favors the Faschingbauer Abbreviated MMPI and the MMPI-168 over others. (Author)
Descriptors: Behavior Rating Scales, Personality Assessment, Personality Measures, Psychological Evaluation

Pritchard, David A.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1980
Concludes that there is no evidence for differential validity in the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) between racial subgroups and that black norms for the MMPI are premature. Criticism of these findings is also presented. (Author/BEF)
Descriptors: Blacks, Methods Research, Personality Measures, Predictive Validity

Nagle, Richard J. – School Psychology Digest, 1979
Research supports the reliability and validity of the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA); but its concurrent validity with conventional intelligence tests suggests that the McCarthy General Cognitive Index and Intelligence Quotient are not comparable. The MCSA eliminates certain weaknesses found in similar tests: the Stanford-Binet and…

Thompson, Duane E.; Thompson, Toni A. – Personnel Psychology, 1982
Reviewed and analyzed selected federal court cases to determine the criteria used by the courts in their assessment of job analyses in the development and validation of selection tests. Presents a set of standards which delineates the components and characteristics of a job analysis necessary to withstand legal scrutiny. (Author)

Thompson, Bruce; Daniel, Larry G. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1996
Editorial board members of "Educational and Psychological Measurement" were asked to list up to five publications each, written since roughly 1950, that they thought were seminal to shaping the measurement field. This bibliography lists 59 of their selections as a "hit parade" of measurement readings. (SLD)
Descriptors: Educational Research, Measurement Techniques, Psychometrics, Reliability

Boehm, Virginia R. – Personnel Psychology, 1982
Examined criterion-related validity studies published in the Journal of Applied Psychology and Personnel Psychology. The major changes are a decline in the volume of reported validation research, and a de-emphasis of aptitude tests as predictors. Changes are interpreted in terms of increasing governmental intervention in employment selection.…

Quattrocchi, Mary; Sherrets, Steven – Psychology in the Schools, 1980
Although the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) involves modifications and a complete restandardization, the literature suggests that it remains very similar in nature to its predecessor, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC). Individuals perform on the WISC-R largely the same as they do on the WISC. (Author)
Descriptors: Children, Elementary Secondary Education, Intelligence Differences, Intelligence Tests

Chignell, Mark H.; Stacey, Barrie G. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1981
Further evidence is provided for assessing the use of cluster analysis in comparison with other multivariate methods. When appropriately used, cluster analysis is a convenient tool for developing empirically based diagnostic groupings. The frequently stated limitations of the technique should not invalidate the obtained groupings of such cases.…
Descriptors: Classification, Clinical Diagnosis, Clinical Psychology, Cluster Analysis

Harrington, R. G. – School Psychology Digest, 1979
Presents Jerome Sattler's encouraging research on a nonverbal form of selected Stanford Binet and Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children subtests, to assess normal, mentally retarded, and cerebral-palsied children. Recommends future research on the predictive validity and multiple-choice modification of the tests. (CP)
