This bibliography was compiled from listings in Dissertation Abstracts International, Library Literature, Library Quarterly, Library Science Dissertations and David H. Eyman's pamphlet Doctoral Dissertations in Library Science. An attempt was made to locate in the five sources those doctoral studies which were either accepted by library schools or concerned with areas bearing a close relationship to the field of librarianship (e.g. communications, information services, education, etc.). Whenever possible, annotations were prepared delineating purpose, procedure, findings, conclusions and recommendations. The University Microfilms' order number is supplied when appropriate. The basic arrangement of the bibliography is chronological, in order to show the development of library science research and the areas emphasized during different time periods. Also included is a statistical description of the dissertations. Using cross tabular and chi-square analysis, an investigation is made of the relationship between the sex of the author, degree received, institution attended, year completed, and research methodology used.
