A Review of Soviet Studies in the Psychology of Learning and Teaching Mathematics (6 Volumes). Proceedings of the National Academy of Education, Vol. 4, 1977.
van Bruggen, Johan C.; Freudenthal, Hans
The English translations of the first six volumes of Studies on the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics in the Soviet Union are viewed in this document. The contents of each volume are briefly described: vol. 1, The Learning of Mathematical Concepts; vol. 2, The Structure of Mathematical Abilities; vol. 3, Problem Solving in Arithmetic and Algebra; vol. 4, Problem Solving in Geometry; vol. 5, The Development of Spatial Abilities; and vol. 6, Instruction in Problem Solving. General comments are made about the nature of research in the Soviet Union, and specific comments are made about individual sections within each volume. In a final section, some general remarks are included. First, the classroom orientation of the studies is noted, with the practicality and the paucity of statistics noted. Second, the choice of articles is questioned. Third, the amount of repetition is noted. Finally, it is concluded that these volumes can be an inspiring source of ideas. (MS)
