Single-Parent Fathers: An Application of Role Transition Theory.
Smith, Richard M.
This paper is an attempt to identify some of the variables affecting the degree to which the single-parent father functions without the aid of a wife. The purpose is to examine some of the variables within the context of role transition theory. Such an examination should be useful in providing the groundwork for both future research and information dissemination. This paper provides a basis for discussion from a brief review of the research literature followed by a review of the role transition theory. In viewing the transition to single parenthood, it is concluded that relatively easy transition is characterized by sufficient anticipatory socialization, low levels of role strain, and goals which may be reasonably easily reached.
