Youth and Caring: Developing a Field of Inquiry and Practice. A Report of a Lilly Endowment Research Grants Program.
Chaskin, Robert J.; Hawley, Theresa
The Lilly Endowment's Research Grants Program on Youth and Caring explored the concept of caring, with the intention of effecting changes in settings and practices. This report is meant to give a brief account of the genesis and development of the Program, summarize the issues raised and findings gleaned from the research and investigation, and serve as a working resource for researchers, practitioners, funders, and policymakers interested in youth and caring. The introduction offers a brief exploration of the Program's conceptual foundations and a historical outline of its development. Part 2 presents a broad overview and synthesis of the work funded under the Program. The projects are grouped by research focus and the review attempts to distill the major thematic concerns of the Program and draw out the central issues raised and lessons learned. Part 3 reviews the themes raised by the papers commissioned by the Endowment to more thoughtfully map out the issues that might help define a field of inquiry and practice around caring. Each paper is summarized as part of this review. Part 4 is a sizable bibliography, partially annotated, which offers an integrated, multidisciplinary set of references related to caring. Appendixes list the grantees and the members of the Youth and Caring Advisory Committee. (AA)
