Opportunities at Independent Colleges and Universities in New York State through the Higher Education Opportunity Program.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Bureau of Higher Education Opportunity Programs.
The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at New York independent colleges and universities is described. Information is provided on eligibility and admission to a HEOP; remedial and developmental courses; tutorial services; academic, personal, and career counseling; financial aid; and economic eligibility criteria. HEOP provides supportive services and financial aid to New York State residents attending private institutions in the state. In general students in opportunity programs are from low income families. They have high potential to be successful at college, but have not acquired the verbal, mathematical, and other cognitive skills required for collegiate level work. Generally their grades fall in the bottom half of their high school graduating class. They are students assigned to a high school with a poor record for developing students, or have been tracked into a general, commercial, or vocational high school program. Opportunity programs are available for students living in urban and rural areas. The names, addresses, and phone numbers of New York private colleges and universities that have HEOP programs are appended. (SW)
