Rubin, B.; Herman, R. M. – American Journal of Physics, 1981
A known but often overlooked property of optical monochromators is discussed in view of its current applications. It is shown that grating and prism monochromators hold on to light for time durations proportional to resolving power and that the dispersing ability of monochromators extends to pulses of arbitrarily short duration. Hale, D. P. – Physics Education, 1981
Describes the construction of an apparatus that demonstrates that electrostatic forces can be large and also gives some idea of dependence of electrostatic forces between charged parallel discs on potential differences and separation. (CS)
Descriptors: Demonstrations (Educational), Design, Physics, Science Education

Cook, D. B.; Fowler, P. W. – American Journal of Physics, 1981
Demonstrates that the Schrodinger equation for the hydrogenlike atom separates in both spheroconal and prolate spheroidal coordinates and that these separations provide a sound theoretical basis for the real and hybrid atomic orbitals. (Author/SK)
Descriptors: Atomic Structure, Chemistry, College Science, Higher Education

Galli, Anthony John; And Others – American Journal of Physics, 1981
Demonstrates how depth of field, exposure correction, and Scheimpflug focusing are obtained for a view camera, using elementary optics. (CS)
Descriptors: College Science, Higher Education, Optics, Photographic Equipment

Physics Education, 1981
Describes various procedures applicable to secondary school science classes, including: (1) constructing a centripetal accelerometer; (2) demonstrating weightlessness with a small scale apparatus employing a catapult; (3) teaching hexadecimal counting by using the fingers; (4) demonstrating oscillation and resonance in tuned circuits. (CS)
Descriptors: Demonstrations (Educational), Design, Physics, Science Education

Arons, Arnold – Physics Teacher, 1981
Summarizes observations of differences in cognitive processes in college physics students. Provides examples of trains of thought and misconceptions exhibited by students and suggests procedures to help resolve the difficulties. (CS)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, College Science, College Students, Concept Formation

Celnikier, L. M. – American Journal of Physics, 1981
A description and short extract are given of a tabulated history of astronomy, in which particular emphasis is placed on the interaction of astronomy with various disciplines. (Author/SK)
Descriptors: Astronomy, College Science, Higher Education, Physics

Basano, L.; Ottonello, P. – American Journal of Physics, 1981
Describes an application of solid-state memories in a laboratory course, which enables students to build electronic devices. Also introduces the fundamentals of analog-to-digital conversion and sampling theory. (CS)
Descriptors: College Science, Electric Circuits, Electronic Equipment, Electronics

School Science Review, 1981
Outlines several laboratory procedures and demonstrations including electric fields using sawdust, experiments with capacitors, particle spacing in a vapor and a liquid, metrology, momentum, Moire patterns and interference fringes, equipping for practical electronics, and using programmable calculators for rapid plotting of graphs. (DS)
