At Berea College all students work 10 to 20 hours a week on campus in a compulsory labor program and pay no tuition. The college maintains high academic standards, and students often use their work experience in later employment. (MSE)

It is estimated that some 220,000 students participate each year in cooperative education programs in 1,100 colleges and universities. Many colleges have increased the grant aid but on most campuses, the major available alternative is employment opportunities.
