Briefly reviews the history of faculty status in academic librarianship and provides suggestions revising standards 5 and 6 of the "Association of College and Research Libraries Standards for Faculty Status," which concern tenure, contracts, and promotion. Twenty-three sources are given. (EJS)

Describes the evolution of the scholarly communication system to its current stage, with special attention paid to the fundamental principles that drive the system. Argues that if librarians are to deserve faculty status, they must comply with standards of excellence similar to those of instructional faculty.
