Page, Robert B.; Espinosa, James; Mares, Chris A.; Del Pilar, Joselyn; Shelton, G. Robert – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2018
Education is frequently cited as the path to an informed citizenry with an optimistic economic outlook. Consequently, it is not surprising that there is an initiative to extend postsecondary educational opportunities to underserved and at-risk demographics. A challenge facing educators that serve at-risk populations is the tension between…

Conant, Donald D. – Journal of Education for Business, 2018
The author's goals in this exercise were to use an Excel project to teach students about the effects of changing states of nature on critical path emergence as well as compare the impact of the PERT beta and triangular distributions on project completion times. Previous research into the PERT (program evaluation and review technique) beta…

Farnsworth, David L. – PRIMUS, 2014
We derive the additive property of Poisson random variables directly from the probability mass function. An important application of the additive property to quality testing of computer chips is presented.

Just over 9% of all students attended more than one institution during the 2012-13 academic year. In each year studied, nearly three-fourths of all mobile students had at least one enrollment at a 2-year public institution. In each of the included years, students in the 20 and under age group had the highest mobility rates, followed by students in…

Minority Enrollment Gains Show Region's Progress toward College Completion Goals. Fact Book Bulletin
Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), 2012
Nationwide, from 2005 to 2010, 1.6 minority (non-white) students enrolled in college for every additional white student who enrolled. In the SREB (Southern Regional Education Board) region that meant 700,312 more minority college students and 411,915 more white college students. Increases in minority student enrollment accounted for almost…

Rossman, Allan J. – Statistics Education Research Journal, 2008
This paper identifies key concepts and issues associated with the reasoning of informal statistical inference. I focus on key ideas of inference that I think all students should learn, including at secondary level as well as tertiary. I argue that a fundamental component of inference is to go beyond the data at hand, and I propose that statistical…

Rodriguez-Lopez, Margarita; Carrasquillo, Arnaldo, Jr. – Journal of Chemical Education, 2006
This article describes the central limit theorem (CLT) and its relation to analytical chemistry. The pedagogic rational, which argues for teaching the CLT in the analytical chemistry classroom, is discussed. Some analytical chemistry concepts that could be improved through an understanding of the CLT are also described. (Contains 2 figures.)
