Structure and Process in Pupils' Essays: A Graphical Analysis of the Organisation of Extended Prose.

Costa Pereira, D.J.V.; Maskill, R. – British Journal of Educational Psychology, 1983
Suggests a method for analyzing structure and process in prose using algorithms based on graph theory and rules based in syntax. Describes application of the method to essays written by 52 fourteen year old pupils on a newly learned topic in chemistry. (Author/GC)

Dugdale, Sharon – 1981
This paper outlines the development of an activity that uses the computer's unique capabilities to provide students with a meaningful and highly motivating experience with the graphing of equations. The basic design of the game calls for the computer to display a coordinate grid on which it graphs any equations that are typed in by the student.…

Smith, F. J.; Devine, K. – Information Processing and Management, 1985
Zipfian laws for frequency distributions of word pairs and longer phrases are derived from text sample analysis. From crossing of Zipfian curves, it is deduced that number of multi-word phrases that occur frequently in text is surprisingly small, of same order of magnitude as number of individual word-types. Woodruff, Allison Gyle; Plaunt, Christian – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1994
Presents an algorithm that automatically extracts words and phrases containing geographic place names or characteristics from a text document and uses them as input to database functions that use spatial reasoning to approximate statistically the geoposition referenced in the text. Preliminary results and future work are discussed. (28 references)…
