A five session program that involved empathy, sensitivity exercises, and a visit to a resource room reduced the ostracizing by fifth graders of their learning disabled peers. The program was designed to deal with the students' values to excel and their typical preadolescent fear of being different from peers. (CL)

Swanson, H. Lee – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1988
Patterns of memory dysfunction were determined in 50 middle school learning disabled readers (LD) through a hierarchical cluster analysis. Results were consistent with memory capacity theories of LD and provided external validation for classification of LD readers on psychometric measures according to patterns of memory performance. A recent study of reading instruction in 28 resource rooms designed for learning-disabled students is described. Program effectiveness was found to be determined by use of student time, method of instruction, and coordination between resource teachers and classroom teachers. Intermediate students in a class for the educationally handicapped were given access to a word processor so that they could spend their energies on organizing ideas rather than on using the pencil and paper.
