Examines the effect of general statements against sexist usage in the style manual for "The Washington Post." Analysis is provided of a minor usage pattern that was not the subject of an explicit rule: the difference in the use of middle initials in references to men and to women. (GLR)

A classroom project designed to increase student comprehension of the rhythms of French journalistic language through familiarization with a weekly magazine is described. Examples of magazine articles dealing with foreign affairs, politics, and television program schedules with teacher-developed comprehension questions are included. (MSE)

Several pedagogical approaches are described that aid at in-depth understanding of the journalistic text by examining the way the journalist's discourse functions.
