Johansson, B. Tomas – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2018
Evaluation of the cosine function is done via a simple Cordic-like algorithm, together with a package for handling arbitrary-precision arithmetic in the computer program Matlab. Approximations to the cosine function having hundreds of correct decimals are presented with a discussion around errors and implementation.

Turton, Roger – Mathematics Teacher, 2016
"Mathematical Lens" uses photographs as a springboard for mathematical inquiry and appears in every issue of "Mathematics Teacher." Recently while dismantling an old wooden post-and-rail fence, Roger Turton noticed something very interesting when he piled up the posts and rails together in the shape of a prism. The total number…

Nanna, Robert J. – The Mathematics Educator, 2016
Algorithms and representations have been an important aspect of the work of mathematics, especially for understanding concepts and communicating ideas about concepts and mathematical relationships. They have played a key role in various mathematics standards documents, including the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. However, there have…

West, John – Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, 2014
In this article, John West explores student misconceptions relating to division. A range of activities that promote the understanding of divisibility rules are provided.

Prentice, J. S. C. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2012
An algorithm for error control (absolute and relative) in the five-point finite-difference method applied to Poisson's equation is described. The algorithm is based on discretization of the domain of the problem by means of three rectilinear grids, each of different resolution. We discuss some hardware limitations associated with the algorithm,…

Wittmann, Michael C.; Flood, Virginia J.; Black, Katrina E. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2013
We show that students rearranging the terms of a mathematical equation in order to separate variables prior to integration use gestures and speech to manipulate the mathematical terms on the page. They treat the terms of the equation as physical objects in a landscape, capable of being moved around. We analyze our results within the tradition of…

Rumsey, Chepina; Langrall, Cynthia W. – Teaching Children Mathematics, 2016
The Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP) in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) (CCSSI 2010) highlight the mathematical habits that educators should be fostering in mathematics classrooms throughout K-grade 12 education. That argumentation and discourse are important components of developing mathematically proficient…

Beaman, Belinda – Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom, 2013
As teachers we are encouraged to contextualize the mathematics that we teach. In this article, Belinda Beaman explains how she used the weather as a context for developing decimal understanding. We particularly enjoyed reading how the students were involved in estimating.

Young-Loveridge, Jenny; Mills, Judith – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 2012
This article explores how a focus on understanding divisibility rules can be used to help deepen students' understanding of multiplication and division with whole numbers. It is based on research with seven Year 7-8 teachers who were observed teaching a group of students a rule for divisibility by nine. As part of the lesson, students were shown a…

Kneller, Shmuel – Gifted Education International, 2012
This article is not comprehensive. It aims at encouraging all teachers of mathematics "to look behind the subject matter" and to probe what educational values it contains. More examples can easily be found. Suffice it to say that when Pythagoras proved his famous theorem, mankind "discovered" that the square root of 2 is an irrational number. The…

Siegler, Robert S.; Thompson, Clarissa A.; Schneider, Michael – Cognitive Psychology, 2011
This article proposes an integrated theory of acquisition of knowledge about whole numbers and fractions. Although whole numbers and fractions differ in many ways that influence their development, an important commonality is the centrality of knowledge of numerical magnitudes in overall understanding. The present findings with 11- and 13-year-olds…

Pope, Sue – Mathematics Teaching, 2012
Of the "big four", division is likely to regarded by many learners as "the odd one out", "the difficult one", "the one that is complicated", or "the scary one". It seems to have been that way "for ever", in the perception of many who have trodden the learning pathways through the world of…

Stupel, Moshe – Australian Senior Mathematics Journal, 2012
The notion of periodicity stands for regular recurrence of phenomena in a particular order in nature or in the actions of man, machine, etc. Many examples can be given from daily life featuring periodicity. Mathematically the meaning of periodicity is that some value recurs with a constant frequency. Students learn about the periodicity of the…

Mortici, Cristinel – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2011
The aim of this article is to establish some interesting inequalities involving arithmetic functions.

Kreith, Kurt; Mendle, Al – Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, 2013
The transition from whole numbers to integers involves challenges for both students and teachers. Leadership in mathematics education calls for an ability to translate depth of understanding into effective teaching methods, and this landscape includes alternative treatments of familiar topics. Noting the multiple meanings associated with the…
