Women at the Naval Academy: The First Year of Integration.
Navy Personnel Research and Development Center, San Diego, CA.
The 81 women who entered the U.S. Naval Academy in the summer of 1976 were breaking precedent and attempting to function in a male ethos with virtually no female role models. A central purpose of this study was to determine how various degrees of contact between male and female midshipmen would affect male attitudes. Plebes were administered two specially designed questionnaires, one in October 1976 and one in May 1977; 500 upperclassmen participated in the second survey. Analyses of responses showed that exposure to women as peers at the academy did tend to break down stereotyping and traditionalism among male plebes during the first year of integration. Additional analyses of results, conclusions, and recommendations are included in the report. (Author/MSE)
