The New Start program at the University of Nebraska-Omaha was initiated in 1975 to focus on the needs and concerns of nontraditional students, i.e, individuals who are at least 25 years old and have been away from formal education for at least three years. Offered as an elective course for one hour of credit, the program includes reviews of basic skills in math and English as well as the learning of study and test-taking skills, stress management, and library skills. The largest single block of New Start time--25 percent of the class sessions--is spent in instruction on the use of library resources. Focusing on the bibliographic instruction component of the program, this paper discusses the special needs of this group of students and how the library instruction helps to meet these needs. The content of the course is also briefly described together with the teaching methods used, students' and librarians' attitudes toward the course, and an assessment of its effectiveness.
