Jessica's Journey: Transforming School Culture
Grover, Kenneth O.
Educational Horizons, v92 p16-20 Apr-May 2014
Kenneth Grover, the principal at Innovations Early College High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, describes a student he calls Jessica who is, unfortunately, one of thousands of students across the country entering and walking away from high school during their first year. These students' efforts are sincere, their attendance superb, and their preparation sufficient. Their drive and determination carried them to the beginning of high school, but no further. In this context, witnessing a static, non progressive system with no hope for change on the horizon, Grover began to dream of a school which truly placed the needs of students before the needs of adults and systems. Within this vision, student voices needed to be heard and listened to in the formation of this school. A survey was created and distributed to over 600 students with three simple questions: (1) What do you like about high school?; (2) What do you not like about high school?; and (3) If you could create a high school, what would it look like? Students desired to have a personalized learning environment that met their needs. Control over the time, pace, path, and place of their education was very important. The majority truly wanted a school created for them and not for the adults, extracurricular activities, or programs. This article provides answers to the following questions: (1) how does one deconstruct all that was created in schools over the last century; and (2) what will the obstacles be? Working as a team of peers, this group put together the framework for the school and transformed pedagogically to a student-centered learning school called Innovations Early College High School.
