An Online-Ready STEM Project for Social Good
Wood, Andrea
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v80 n1 p32-36 Sep 2020
Fresh off its pilot year in 2019, International Technology and Engineering Educators Association's (ITEEA's) REACH Challenge has added a new toolkit component for 2020, which gives teachers everything they need to participate in this innovative STEM project--no matter if their classroom is in person, online, or a hybrid of both. REACH Challenge is a design-thinking project for middle school, high school, and college STEM students. Teachers and their students use their STEM skills to REACH a member of their community who has a challenge to overcome, and design an adaptive or assistive technological solution to their problem. Oftentimes, the adaptive or assistive technology that someone needs simply cannot be bought in stores. With REACH Challenge, STEM students can create a customized piece of adaptive tech made specifically for that person. They can literally give someone the gift of inclusion, independence, or mobility. To help increase these opportunities for life-changing connections, REACH Challenge has partnered with MO Better Foundation and other nonprofits that work to enhance and support the lives of those impacted by a wide range of physical challenges, such as Spina Bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and stroke survivors.
