When COVID-19 Crashed Commencement
Sullivan, Sara C. W.; Fell, Julie; Keogh, Becky
College and University, v96 n1 p49-52 Feb 2021
The State University of Iowa held inaugural commencement practices in 1857--a mere eleven years after Iowa became a state. The flagship, now named the University of Iowa (UI), has a long and storied commencement history. Commencements have been cancelled. They have been postponed. They have been displaced. But they have never been virtual…until COVID-19 crashed commencement in the spring of 2020. UI has an Office of Strategic Communication (OSC) which partners with the Office of the Registrar each commencement to livestream commencement and post them for viewing later. OSC partners reached out and pitched the idea of a virtual commencement. More accurately, they proposed fifteen virtual commencements, all tailored to fit the needs of each college to air at the time each was originally scheduled to take place. So, how did it all end up? UI delivered all fifteen unique ceremonies on time. UI considered this a big Hawkeye win and a huge accomplishment achieved through collaboration, teamwork, and, ultimately, the love of the students. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and though imperfect, the virtual ceremonies provided a platform for celebration.
