STEM Students Develop Entrepreneurial Skills by Engaging in Competitions

Entrepreneurial science emerged out of universities such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) over the past 30 years where connectivity between universities, industry and government has given rise to significant successes in basic and applied sciences (Etzkowitz, 2002). Entrepreneurial education comprises entrepreneurship and enterprise education. Entrepreneurship is concerned with organising people to develop opportunities for the creation of social, cultural and/or financial value (Bacigalupo et al., 2016). Enterprise education is the personal development of specific skills, behaviours and attributes that lead to an entrepreneurial mindset (QAA, 2018). Enterprise skills can be regarded as soft skills that go beyond subject-specific knowledge and academic achievements. These skills foster the self-awareness and self-confidence that allows students to set clear goals with good time management. Skills in communication, problem solving and creativity will equip students with tools they need when entering the workforce in the future.
