White Christian Nationalism as a State-Organized Social Movement

New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n186 p14-20 2025
The rapidly growing body of scholarship exploring White Christian nationalism in the United States has generated criticism for a lack of conceptual specificity. To address this shortcoming, we propose conceptualizing White Christian nationalism as a social movement. We explore how this conceptualization improves on past frameworks and offers new directions for White Christian nationalism scholarship. In particular, we consider the recent political successes of the movement and the implications of White Christian nationalism gaining power within the American government, which also helps us make sense of White Christian nationalism as a type of state-organized movement. We conclude with a discussion of how adult education sites, like churches, universities, and community organizations, must play a central role in forming the counter-movement opposing the illiberal threat of White Christian nationalism.
