Examination of Human Chemosensory Function
Smutzer, Gregory; Sayed, Samir; Sayed, Nabil
American Biology Teacher, v68 n5 p269-274 May 2006
An increased understanding of olfaction and gustation has underlined the critical importance of these two chemical senses in determining how humans respond to their environment. In this article, recent advances in chemosensory research are summarized. The use of a smell identification test, an odor discrimination test, and a test for anosmia to a specific odorant is described so that students can examine their sense of smell by inquiry-based learning. The experiments on chemosensory function described in this article can be easily performed in the laboratory or classroom to demonstrate the importance of the chemical senses in human physiology.
