Taajah Felder Witherspoon – Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, 2023
The results of this study revealed students' solution strategies progressed from inefficient strategies e.g., counting on fingers to more efficient strategies with mathematical connections. These findings should enable educators to gain more insight to use Number Talks to help student develop computational fluency with numbers.

Erciulescu, Andreea; Ren, Weijia; Li, Jianzhu; Mohadjer, Leyla; Fay, Robert – National Center for Education Statistics, 2022
The Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is a multicycle survey of adult skills and competencies sponsored by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The survey examines a range of basic skills in the information age and assesses these adult skills consistently across participating…

Matthews, Percival G.; Hubbard, Edward M. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 2017
The three target articles presented in this special issue converged on an emerging theme: the importance of spatial proportional reasoning. They suggest that the ability to map between symbolic fractions (like 1/5) and nonsymbolic, spatial representations of their sizes or "magnitudes" may be especially important for building robust…

Gifford, Sue – Research in Mathematics Education, 2014
This article sets out to evaluate the English Early Years Foundation Stage Goal for Numbers, in relation to research evidence. The Goal, which sets out to provide "a good foundation in mathematics", has greater breadth of content and higher levels of difficulty than previous versions. Research suggests that the additional expectations…

Ragpot, Lara – South African Journal of Childhood Education, 2014
The article reports on the process of producing a film for students in a university course. The purpose of the production was to make local film material that could assist students in their learning of developmental cognitive psychology theory in general, but specifically also the mathematical cognition of children. Although the students in the…

Mamedova, Saida; Sparks, Dinah; Hoyer, Kathleen Mulvaney – National Center for Education Statistics, 2017
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) conducted the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), a multi-domain adult skills assessment with an extensive background questionnaire, in 2012. PIAAC is a global effort to understand how individuals' education, workplace experiences, and other…

Askew, Mike – South African Journal of Childhood Education, 2013
Children's learning of early number bonds is a significant issue in South African schools because evidence shows that flexible and efficient (fluent and reasoned) knowledge of number bonds to 20 correlates with success at the end of primary schooling, yet the evidence is that many South African students are over-reliant on inefficient counting…

Barth, Hilary C.; Paladino, Annie M. – Developmental Science, 2011
How do our mental representations of number change over development? The dominant view holds that children (and adults) possess multiple representations of number, and that age and experience lead to a shift from greater reliance upon logarithmically organized number representations to greater reliance upon more accurate, linear representations.…

Kajoro, Peter – Mathematics Teaching, 2012
The supposed pre-eminence of an external examination can exert a disproportionate influence on a curriculum and the associated learning and teaching. Teaching can easily subordinate learning and understanding to curriculum coverage if the society develops a culture that appears to make such demands. This study focuses on Tanzania and provides the…

Young-Loveridge, Jennifer – Teachers and Curriculum, 2011
This paper challenges the emphasis on counting in New Zealand's Numeracy Development Project (NDP), arguing that subitizing provides an alternative pathway to quantification. Longitudinal data is presented showing that children's subitizing skills at the age of five years were a strong predictor of their later success in mathematics at the age of…

Hinton, Vanessa; Flores, Margaret M.; Shippen, Margaret – Online Submission, 2013
Response to intervention (RTI) is a framework in which interventions are implemented mostly in general education classes to resolve academic difficulties and help to mitigate contextual variables (i.e., lack of instruction, socio economic status, cultural differences, etc.) as an explanation for academic failure. The implementation of…

Goodman, Madeline; Finnegan, Robert; Mohadjer, Leyla; Krenzke, Tom; Hogan, Jacquie – National Center for Education Statistics, 2013
The Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) is a cyclical, large scale study of adult skills and life experience focusing on education and employment that was developed and organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In the United States, the study was conducted in 2011-12 with a…

Fuchs, Lynn S.; Powell, Sarah R.; Seethaler, Pamela M.; Cirino, Paul T.; Fletcher, Jack M.; Fuchs, Douglas; Hamlett, Carol L. – Learning and Individual Differences, 2010
The primary purpose of this study was to assess the effects of strategic counting instruction, with and without deliberate practice with those counting strategies, on number combination (NC) skill among students with mathematics difficulties (MD). Students (n = 150) were stratified on MD status (i.e., MD alone versus MD with reading difficulty)…

Seethaler, Pamela M.; Fuchs, Lynn S. – Exceptional Children, 2010
This study examined the reliability, validity, and predictive utility of kindergarten screening for risk for math difficulty (MD). Three screening measures, administered in September and May of kindergarten to 196 students, assessed number sense and computational fluency. Conceptual and procedural outcomes were measured at end of first grade, with…
