Mims, Pamela J.; Browder, Diane M.; Baker, Joshua N.; Lee, Angel; Spooner, Fred – Education and Training in Developmental Disabilities, 2009
Shared stories have been shown to help increase emerging literacy skills in students with significant intellectual disabilities. Lengyel, L. M.; And Others – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1990
The study with three blind and mentally retarded adults with additional disabilities found that general case simulation instruction in housekeeping skills led to generalization to untrained settings. Degree of generalization was inversely related to the severity and complexity of participant disability. (Author/DB)

Michell, Sheila; And Others – B. C. Journal of Special Education, 1988
A forward graduated guidance procedure was used to increase the independent dressing skills of two profoundly multihandicapped adolescents living in a noninstitutional environment. One subject reached criterion and treatment gains generalized to other settings. The other subject failed to reach criterion but required fewer prompts after training.…

Horn, Eva M.; Warren, Steven F. – Journal of the Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps (JASH), 1987
The effects of a combined neuromotor/behavioral approach using a microcomputer mediated teaching system on the acquisition of basic motor skills by two young children (17- and 24-months-old) with severe and multiple disabilities were examined. Increased frequency and duration of target behaviors in both training and generalizing settings were…

Hinderscheit, Linda R.; Reichle, Joe – AAC Augmentative and Alternative Communication, 1987
A severely intellectually delayed and physically handicapped 18-year-old woman was taught a direct select color encoding strategy as a potential means of increasing the available vocabulary on her communication board using a "chained matching-to-sample" procedure. The skill was maintained and generalized to new exemplars. (Author/DB)

Luiselli, J. K. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1988
Positive reinforcement was used to effectively treat aggressive and noncompliant behavior of two visually impaired, multiply handicapped male students (an 18-year-old and an 11-year-old). In one case positive effects of treating aggressive behaviors generalized to a reduction in self injurious behaviors. (DB)

Rasing, Eef J.; Duker, Pieter C. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1992
This study evaluated effects of a multifaceted training procedure on acquisition and generalization of social behaviors of 9 language-disabled deaf children (ages 8-9). The intervention involved child training as well as supervision, feedback, and goal setting by teachers and staff. Results indicated increases in appropriate target behaviors which…
