Lee, Soon-Mook – International Journal of Testing, 2010
CEFA 3.02(Browne, Cudeck, Tateneni, & Mels, 2008) is a factor analysis computer program designed to perform exploratory factor analysis. It provides the main properties that are needed for exploratory factor analysis, namely a variety of factoring methods employing eight different discrepancy functions to be minimized to yield initial…

Stellefson, Michael; Hanik, Bruce – Online Submission, 2008
When conducting an exploratory factor analysis, the decision regarding the number of factors to retain following factor extraction is one that the researcher should consider very carefully, as the decision can have a dramatic effect on results. Although there are numerous strategies that can and should be utilized when making this decision,…

Krijnen, Wim P.; Dijkstra, Theo K.; Gill, Richard D. – Psychometrika, 1998
Gives sufficient and necessary conditions for the observability of factors in terms of the parameter matrices and a finite number of variables. Outlines five conditions that rigorously define indeterminacy and shows that (un)observable factors are (in)determinate, and extends L. Guttman's (1955) proof of indeterminacy to Heywood (H. Heywood, 1931)…

Kiers, Henk A. L. – Psychometrika, 1997
Provides a fully flexible approach for orthomax rotation of the core to simple structure with respect to three modes simultaneously. Computationally the approach relies on repeated orthomax rotation applied to supermatrices containing the frontal, lateral, or horizontal slabs, respectively. Exemplary analyses illustrate the procedure. (Author/SLD)

Woodward, Todd S.; Hunter, Michael A. – Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, 1999
Demonstrates that traditional exploratory factor analytic methods, when applied to correlation matrices, cannot be used to estimate unattenuated factor loadings. Presents a mathematical basis for the accurate estimation of such values when the disattenuated correlation matrix or the covariance matrix is used as input. Explains how the equations…

Trendafilov, Nickolay T. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1996
An iterative process is proposed for obtaining an orthogonal simple structure solution. At each iteration, a target matrix is constructed such that the relative contributions of the target majorize the original ones, factor by factor. The convergence of the procedure is proven, and the algorithm is illustrated. (SLD)

van Schuur, Wijbrandt H.; Kiers, Henk A. L. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1994
The identification of two factors when one factor is expected is an artifact caused by using factor analysis on data that would be more appropriately analyzed with a unidimensional unfolding model. A numerical illustration is given, and ways to determine whether data conform to the unidimensional unfolding model are reviewed. (SLD)

Kiers, Henk A. L. – Psychometrika, 1994
A class of oblique rotation procedures is proposed to rotate a pattern matrix so that it optimally resembles a matrix that has an exact simple pattern. It is demonstrated that the method can recover relatively complex simple structures where other simple structure rotation techniques fail. (SLD)

ten Berge, Jos M. F. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1996
H. F. Kaiser, S. Hunka, and J. Bianchini have presented a method (1971) to compare two matrices of factor loadings based on the same variables, but different groups of individuals. The optimal rotation involved is examined from a mathematical point of view, and the method is shown to be invalid. (SLD)

Trendafilov, Nickolay T. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1994
An alternative to the PROMAX exploratory method is presented for constructing a target matrix in Procrustean rotation in factor analysis. A technique is proposed based on vector majorization. The approach is illustrated with several standard numerical examples. (SLD)

Weigle, David C.; Snow, Alicia – 1995
Various analytic choices in principal components and common factor analysis are discussed. Differences and similarities among these extraction methods are explained, and aids in interpreting the origin of detected effects are explored. Specifically, the nature and use of structure and pattern coefficients are examined. Communalities and methods…

Hester, Yvette – 1996
Data reduction techniques seek to combine variables that account for patterns of variation in observed dependent variables in such a way that a simpler model is available for analysis. Factor analysis is a data reduction technique that attempts to model or explain a set of variables in terms of their associations. To understand why this technique…

Dunlap, William P.; Cornwell, John M. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1994
The fundamental problems that ipsative measures impose for factor analysis are shown analytically. Normative and ipsative correlation matrices are used to show that the factor pattern induced by ipsativity will overwhelm any factor structure seen with normative factor analysis, making factor analysis not interpretable. (SLD)

Kiers, Henk A. L. – Psychometrika, 1997
Five techniques that combine the ideals of rotation of matrices of factor loadings to optimal agreement and rotation to simple structure are compared on the basis of empirical and contrived data. Combining a generalized Procrustes analysis with Varimax on the main of the matched loading matrices performed well on all criteria. (SLD)

Paunonen, Sampo V. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1997
A Monte Carlo simulation evaluated conditions that contribute to excessively high coefficients of congruence when fitting one factor pattern matrix into the space of a targeted pattern. Results support the conclusion that orthogonal Procrustes methods of factor rotation do produce spurious coefficients between predictor and criterion factor…
