The Albuquerque City Center Schools and Rio Grande Cluster Schools Program Evaluation 1985-86.
During the 1985-86 school year the Albuquerque City Center Schools and Rio Grande High School Cluster Project focused on student literacy skills, behavior, and attendance. A variety of activities and programs were initiated. Main components of the program were the following: (1) itinerant teachers worked with classroom teachers to conduct professional study groups, provide resources and support, and model teaching strategies; (2) full-time librarians were placed in all of the elementary schools and in the two clusters to sponsor reading activities; (3) an intensive program of vocabulary development, writing, and reading comprehension was initiated among freshmen at Rio Grande High School; (4) discipline policies were implemented and awards were given as incentives to improve attendance; and (5) staff participated in development activities such as workshops and instructional planning days. The evaluation of this project included interviews and the analysis of test scores and demographic data. The findings were the following: (1) classroom teachers have become more aware of instructional issues and have changed their teaching strategies; (2) student attitudes toward teaching have improved; (3) certain groups of students improved their skills in reading, writing, and language arts; and (4) principals noted improvements in student attendance and behavior, although this was not verified by attendance records. Tables and appendices include statistical and budgetary information. (VM)
