The purpose of this article is to use transformational leadership theory to analyze and define the leadership style of legendary BYU football coach LaVell Edwards. This article will introduce a brief history of leadership theory in sport, including the development of Chelladurai's 1993 Multidimensional Model of Leadership. Then, the article analyzes the transformational behaviors and characteristics of Edwards, using the coaching philosophy outlined in his professional memoir LaVel: Airing it Out, as well as other sources that highlight the essential elements of his leadership style.
