An outpouring of support--in various forms--was all it took to change the mind of Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, president of Bennett College, who had decided on April 27 to resign from the 132-year-old Black college for women. In a prepared statement, Cole described how it felt to see supporters lined up at the president's house when she returned home the night after announcing her intentions during a board of trustees meeting. She also remarked on how she felt when presented with a vote of support signed by more than 50 of the university's faculty members. "I deeply appreciate the notes, calls and e-mails from around the country, urging me to stay the course at Bennett," Cole wrote. At the meeting, Cole informed the board of her intentions to resign effective July 15. She said at the meeting that a group of professors was attempting to throw a wrench into plans she had for the college. The board immediately rejected her decision."We the Board of Trustees of Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C., are now, and have been supportive of our President Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole," the board said in a statement the day of the meeting. "We will continue to support and affirm her leadership and will in no way hinder her ability to lead this great institution, and we will not accept her resignation. We will provide whatever it takes for Dr. Cole to have the kind of atmosphere where she can successfully do her work."
