The relationship between scores on objective tests of language skills and on free writing tasks was analyzed for third and eighth graders. Correlations between scores were of the same magnitude as reported for college students. Differences in relationships between free-writing performance and objective test scores are discussed. Scores of 149 third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade pupils, on a reading attitude inventory correlated .17 with combined reading scores on the Metropolitan Achievement Tests. Although statistically significant, this finding suggests that the inventory did not reflect an attitudinal construct that was a major factor in reading success. (Author/BW)

The scores of a sample of 116 first-grade rural Georgia pupils from a reading attitude inventory were correlated .18 with the reading composite scores on the Metropolitan Achievement Test. Coefficients of .48 and .32 were found for females and blacks respectively. The low degree of correspondences limited practical significance. (Author/PN)
