Becker, Lee A. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1987
Presents and develops a general model of the nature of a learning system and a classification for learning systems. Highlights include the relationship between artificial intelligence and cognitive psychology; computer-based instructional systems; intelligent instructional systems; and the role of the learner's knowledge base in an intelligent…

Hobbs, D. J. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1987
Description of a study which formulated a model of the cognitive processes involved in learning statistics material via computer assisted learning (CAL) focuses on mode of presentation (aural or visual), sequence of the material, and previous mathematical experience. Textual analysis is discussed and implications of the results for design of CAL…

Brewer, Ilma M.; Tomlinson, J. David – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1981
Describes a study to determine if time spent in modular instruction is related to improvement in performance on weekly tests or final examinations across four years in a course on plant anatomy taught by Self-Instructional Modules and Interactive small Group discussion (SIMIG). Twenty-one references are listed. (Author/CHC)
Descriptors: Audiovisual Aids, Autoinstructional Aids, Botany, Correlation
Dul, J.; And Others – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1987
Presents a model of the role of instructional feedback in learning a motor skill and identifies six levels of motor skill output, each of which has a characteristic type of feedback. The usefulness of several feedback techniques reported in the literature is discussed. (Author/LRW)

Maddrell, David – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1982
Three training methods differing in degree of abstraction (demonstration, slide-diagram, and diagram) were used to instruct adolescents (26 control and 21 aphasic) in the completion of two tasks. Results indicated that aphasics have a deficit of abstract thinking which can prove a handicap in training situations. Ten sources are cited. (EJS)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Adolescents, Aphasia, Comparative Analysis
Gabriel, J.; Pillai, J. K. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1981
The effectiveness of a modular approach to learning in a botany unit as compared to the traditional teaching approach in terms of learning efficiency, learning time, and mastery level is reported. Three references are cited. (Author/CHC)
Descriptors: Audiovisual Aids, Botany, Developing Nations, Flexible Scheduling
Becker, Lee A. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1988
Explores how a set of possible student misconceptions about solving a complex problem can be used in computer-based intelligent tutoring systems and in computer-based exercise and test generation. Topics discussed include expert systems, misconception covers, discrimination trees, methods of acquiring the set of misconceptions, and protocol…

Hodgson, Vivien E. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1986
This study examined the interrelationship between the support system and learning materials of a distance learning source and the influence this relationship has on students' experiences and approaches to learning. Learners' experiences with two different distance learning courses which used the same learning materials but different support…

Duchastel, Philippe C. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1983
An exploratory study sought reactions from adult students to study materials provided for them in an independent study program. This study is part of an effort to improve instructional materials for distance education by relating the actual study strategies used by students to instructional design components. (EAO)

Holmberg, Borje – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1985
Develops a theory of mediated learning from practice. Problems inherent in developing theories are reviewed; general assumptions are identified; and a descriptive theory is generated that identifies favorable factors facilitating learning. Factors are checked for consistency and used to generate hypotheses for collecting research data capable of…

Reshetova, Z. A. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1982
The process of forming practical abilities and skills in training situations through the control of the assimilation process is described, and an experimental application of this process for the instruction of machine operators is reported. Six references are included. (CHC)
Descriptors: Ability, Concept Formation, Evaluation Methods, Foreign Countries
Sankar, Y. – Programmed Learning and Educational Technology, 1988
Describes model for evaluating computer-assisted instruction (CAI) that includes training needs; instructional objectives; types of learning; organization of program content; and the design of instructional modes. Also discussed are evaluation of CAI courseware and student-oriented review of courseware, and a condensed evaluation checklist is…
