Weiss, Edmond H. – Journal of Technical Writing and Communication, 1990
Argues that Nassi-Schneiderman (NS) charts, when used to diagram human procedures, can eliminate prose ambiguities. Asserts that these devices provide most of the advantages of decision tables and trees. Suggests using NS charts in testing the logic and completeness of traditional procedures, or even in place of many traditional publications. (SG)

Burke, Ken – International Journal of Instructional Media, 1997
Explains several diagrams showing the evolution of significant film genres in context of each other and relevant historical trends. Wilcox, Wayne C.; And Others – Journal of Instructional Development, 1981
In the research study described, 80 subjects in one control and four treatment groups viewed sets of slides on types of sailboats. Results indicate that making apparent the hierarchical relationships among concepts of a conceptual hierarchy enhances learner performance in classifying unencountered instances of those concepts. Thirty-eight…

Purnell, Kathleen M. – Library Resources and Technical Services, 1979
An analysis of the procedures used at Indiana University's Regional Campus Libraries Technical Services Center is presented to document a complex interface between the center's automated acquisitions/cataloging system and the OCLC system. (Author)

Waller, Robert – 1981
A survey of a range of introductory university level textbooks in the social sciences found little use of network diagrams (NDs), i.e., graphic representations of processes, organizations, systems, and mechanisms. NDs can be viewed as a text/picture hybrid medium with titles and captions serving to qualify and identify the meaning and status of…

Kolling, Orland W. – 1983
Characteristics of liberal arts education and different approaches to educational modeling are examined. Attention is directed to: applications of graphic depictions; Venn-Euler diagrams to represent inclusion-exclusion phenomena as well as areas of commonality in learning processes and liberal education; the uses of flow charts for describing…

Burgess, John – System, 1994
This paper argues that schema theory and discourse analysis demonstrate that flow charts, grids, and tree diagrams are the most effective models of how the mind organizes ideas in information sets. It shows how each of these frameworks can be used as the central device in an integrated model of language learning. (15 references) (MDM)

Rosen, Monica – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 2001
Notes how females are known to excel over males in most reading tasks, but not consistently so in tasks that require processing information from maps, tables, charts and diagrams, so called "Documents." Describes and analyzes gender differences on Document tasks, and investigates if and how the pattern of differences varies over countries. (SG)

Muller, H.; Thiele, G. – 1974
Benefits which working with microfilm-forms (roll film, microfiche, or aperture card) offer for archives, libraries, and documentation centers are presented, as well as means (processes, instruments, materials) which can be employed in the field of microfilm technology for UNESCO's international information exchange in education, medicine, the…

Beniger, James R.; Westney, D. Eleanor – Journal of Communication, 1981
Compares the "New York Times" and the "Asahi Shimbun" in terms of density, variety, and extensive use of statistical and didactic graphics. Tankard, James W., Jr. – 1986
The use of quantitative graphics in newspapers requires achieving a balance between being accurate and getting the attention of the reader. The statistical representations in newspapers are drawn by graphic designers whose key technique is fusion--the striking combination of two visual images. This technique often results in visual puns,…

Branch, Robert C.; Bloom, Janet R. – 1995
This study explores the interpretation of two types of flow diagrams composed of different visual elements intended to communicate the same meaning. Using linear and cyclical diagrams, the study focused on whether, given a series of diagrams using linear elements and a series using cyclical elements, both types of visuals convey the same message…

Johnson, Scott D.; Satchwell, Richard E. – 1992
A quasiexperimental study involved 18 male students enrolled in an aircraft systems course at the University of Illinois. The control group of 10 students studied 39 schematic diagrams of aircraft systems. The treatment group of eight students studied the same schematic diagrams plus conceptual diagrams of the systems. Otherwise, the instruction…

Reed, Lawrence E.; And Others – 1975
The methods and problems encountered in the development of a prototype human resources data handbook are discussed.
