Oller, D. Kimbrough; Smith, Bruce L. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Disorders, 1981
Premeaningful vocalizations produced by nine normally developing and 10 Down's syndrome infants were recorded as part of a longitudinal study of language development. Both groups began to produce canonical, reduplicated babbling at 8 to 8 1/2 months of age, and trends regarding consonantal and vocalic development for both groups were similar…

And Others; Mahoney, Gerald – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1981
Results indicated that Down's syndrome children are delayed in their language development compared to nonretarded children of the same developmental age. This language delay appears to be related to deficiencies in vocal imitation skills but is not related to general sensorimotor functioning. (Author)

Metcalfe, J. Alban; Stratford, B. – Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 1981
There was some evidence to support the suggestion that certain types of mentally handicapped children attend to singe cues rather than to total configuration. There was also evidence of perceptual distortion resulting in reversal and attraction to "good form." (Author)

Education Unlimited, 1979
The friendship and advocacy relationship between a young man with Down's syndrome and a town fire marshall are discussed, along with a profile of a 13-year-old physically disabled boy who participated in the 1979 International Special Olympics. (CL)

Coggins, Truman E.; Morrison, Judith A. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1981
The study examined the spontaneous imitations produced by four Stage-1 preschool Down's syndrome children. The imitation speech of the children was compared to their spontaneous productions to determine whether words imitated are different from those produced spontaneously. (Author)

Sinson, Janice C.; Wetherick, N. E. – Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 1981
It appeared that the normal children made heroic but unsuccessful attempts to establish contact with DS children but eventually give up, with the result that the DS child becomes an isolate in the group--interacting with none except the adult helpers. (Author/SB)

Stratford, B. – Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 1979
The results supported the hypothesis that mentally handicapped children have a significant attraction to symmetrical arrangement, and that Down's syndrome children are more significantly attracted than other retarded children. (Author/DLS)

And Others; Henderson, Sheila E. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1981
The findings provided tentative support for the notion that Down syndrome children suffer a specific deficit in some areas of motor coordination. (Author)

Layton, Thomas L.; Sharifi, Hassan – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1979
The structure of the spontaneous language samples of nine Down's syndrome children (7 to 12 years old) was compared to that of nine nonretarded children, using the generative semantic model proposed by W. Chate. Language samples were analyzed in terms of mean length of utterance and semantic structure. (Author/SBH)

And Others; Gunn, Patricia – Mental Retardation, 1980
An analysis of the mother's speech suggested that her mean length of utterance was unrelated to the infant's age. More object referencing and more directions were given as the child grew older. (Author/DLS)

And Others; Hann, Hie-Won L. – American Journal of Mental Deficiency, 1979
Distributions of the serum immunoglobulins (IgM), of T and B lymphocytes, and subpopulations of B lymphocytes were studied in children and institutionalized adults with Down's syndrome and appropriate mentally retarded controls. (Author)

Stratford, B. – Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 1980
Results showed that both groups had a preferred dimension for size over pattern. When size and patterns were combined, the Down's syndrome Ss were confused by the two dimensions, showing preference for one or the other. (Author/DLS)
