Used Monte Carlo methods to compare several measures of item-parameter drift, manipulating numbers of examinees and items and numbers of drift items. Overall, Lord's chi square (F. Lord, 1968) measure was the most effective in identifying items that exhibited drift. Discusses the usefulness of other methods. (SLD)

Internal measures of differential functioning of items and tests (DFIT) based on item response theory (IRT) are proposed. The new differential test functioning index leads to noncompensatory DIF indices. Monte Carlo studies demonstrate that these indices are accurate in assessing DIF. (SLD)

Monte Carlo techniques were used to examine regression approaches to external unfolding. The present analysis examined the technique to determine if various characteristics of the points are recovered (such as ideal points). Generally, monotonic analyses resulted in good recovery. (TJH)

Type I error rates for the likelihood ratio test for detecting differential item functioning (DIF) were investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. Type I error rates for the two-parameter model were within theoretically expected values at each alpha level, but those for the three-parameter model were not. (SLD)

A classification scheme is presented for procedures to detect differential item functioning (DIF) for dichotomously scored items that is applicable to new DIF procedures for polytomously scored items. A formal development of a polytomous version of a dichotomous DIF technique is presented. (SLD)

An expanded version of the method of content evaluation proposed by S. G. Sireci and K. F. Giesinger (1992) was evaluated with respect to a national licensure examination and a nationally standardized social studies achievement test. Two groups of 15 subject-matter experts rated the similarity and content relevance of the items. (SLD)
