News Coverage of Urban Problems in the Mexican Metropolitan Press.
Sewell, Michael
Editors of 16 daily newspapers in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey were interviewed regarding their awareness of local and international urban problems and the reporting of urban problems in their newspapers. Content analysis was then used to determine the urban problems covered by the newspapers. In narrative and tabular form, this document reports and compares the interviewees' rankings of 20 urban problems and the rankings of those problems according to their coverage by the 16 newspapers. The rankings of the journalists, as well as the rankings derived from content analysis, are also compared on a city-by-city basis. Analysis of the findings indicates that there are a number of discrepancies between what the editors perceived to be the most important urban problems and what problems were actually reported in their newspapers. The data show strong correlations of rankings--both by journalists and by newspaper coverage--when subjected to intra-city comparisons. (GW)
