Climbing the Ladder to Leadership--A Panel Discussion.
Cawood, Joe; And Others
Five papers look at facets of leadership and its development in the schools. The first paper, "The Development of Pupil Leadership" by Joe Cawood, looks at definitions of giftedness which include leadership, and offers an inverted pyramid model of leadership development in schools. The second paper, "Class-Based and Subject-Related Leadership Development for School Pupils" by Sunita Conradie, identifies teaching strategies to foster leadership development, including an atmosphere of relaxed accpetance in the classroom and the incorporation into the syllabus of a theme on leadership. Strategies were successfully implemented in nine South Africa high schools. Appendixes list appropriate curriculum components, teaching methods, and activities. The next paper, also by Conradie, is entitled "Guidelines for the Identification of Leadership Potential in School Pupils." Guidelines are offered concerning early identification, continuous identification, and use of a multidimensional approach. The fourth paper, by Johan Slabbert, is titled "Leadership Development at Paul Roos Gymnasium" and describes a program which developed leadership skills through a system of class committees involved in project planning and decision making. The final paper, by Chris Kapp, is called "Creating the Climate for Climbing the Leadership Ladder." It looks at the role of prefect councils and head prefects in South Africa's schools and the development of a head prefect leadership training program in the Cape Province. (DB)
