Building Statistical Literacy from the Ground Up: Playing with Blocks
Giebitz, Robert
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (Washington, DC, Apr 8-12, 2016)
This pilot project explored the extent to which a pre-literate child can identify and record basic statistical concepts of shape, spread, and center represented by blocks in the form of a frequency distribution. A simple apparatus consisting of a ruler, pencil, and set of blocks was designed to engage a child in playful exercises under the guidance of a tutor in which the child recorded measures of dispersion, central tendency, dot plots and boxplots. Measures were determined through direct observation, counting, and manipulation of blocks without computation. This pilot demonstrates that play with simple artifacts might contribute to building statistical literacy in children. The apparatus can be made locally at little or no cost.
