Self-Disclosure Situations Survey: A New Approach to Measuring Self-Disclosure.
Chelune, Gordon J.
The preliminary development of a new self-report measure of self-disclosure --the Self-Disclosure Situations Survey (SDSS)--is reported. The SDSS is a brief, 20-item instrument that provides a total self-disclosure score, as well as subtotal scores for four target categories. The SDSS is specifically designed to be sensitive to the social-situational determinates of self-disclosure, that is, to the influences of target-person and setting-condition differences upon an individual's level of disclosure. Study 1 reports the analysis of the SDSS in terms of variance components to determine the relative influence of sex, person, target, and setting condition factors upon self-disclosure. Study 1 also describes how the SDSS can be adapted to provide an index of self-disclosure flexibility. Study 2 examines the predictive validity of one of the SDSS's target categories. Significant positive relationships with actual verbal behavior were found for males, whereas significant negative relationships were found for females. It was suggested that males and females may use different criteria to rate their self-disclosing behavior. (Author)
