The Effectiveness of Selected Recruitment Techniques on Undergraduate Students Enrolling in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University (Part I).
Graham, Gene Foster
A questionnaire was developed to survey 120 students during the "Meet Your College" presentation of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources of Michigan State University, during "Welcome Week" in the fall of 1984. The data were analyzed to compare freshmen students with transfer students, male students with female students, and students of various residency backgrounds (rural, small town, small city, large city). All three sets of comparisons found differences in preferences for types of college information, differences in the sources of information that were influential in their college choice, and differences in preferences for recruitment activities. Positive influences on deciding to enroll included the quality of the academic programs, academic reputation, atmosphere/appearance of the campus, quality of the faculty, and other factors. Recruitment activities considered to be helpful included visiting a family member or friend on campus, talking with university students or graduates, talking with high school counselors or teachers, participating in university open houses or athletic events, seeing television advertisements or stories, and others. Appendices contain a copy of the questionnaire and tabulated data from questionnaire responses. Includes 60 references. (JDD)
