A review of the social needs of adolescents in Glendale (California) and elsewhere was conducted to determine the needs and potential support for the proposed Glendale Teen Support Center (GTSC) and to provide documentation for the Center's future funding requests. The GTSC was conceived as an after-school social center that would provide a positive social environment for high school students and act as a clearinghouse for specialized youth services. Information was gathered from the following sources: a literature review about the conditions of youth nationally, statewide, and locally; a telephone survey of community agencies providing youth programming; and a survey of 13,590 high school students. The following summary conclusions are reported: (1) there is considerable support among both adolescents and adults for the GTSC; (2) GTSC board members seem well-regarded in their respective communities and appear to be qualified to manage the proposed project; (3) community leaders are aware that adolescents are acutely underserved; and (4) existing youth outreach services are too small, too narrowly focused, and/or otherwise inappropriate to serve the majority of the community's youth.
