The lack of leisure reading of learning disabled seventh graders was addressed by the implementation of a 3-part reading program. First, a sustained silent reading program was established school-wide on a daily basis. Second, a target group of 15 seventh grade learning disabled students participated in sustained silent reading with writing twice a week. Third, the same control group was involved in a reading incentive program to encourage leisure reading at home. Success was measured by comparing statistics important to student attitudes about reading, student reading habits, the length of time spent reading and responding to reading materials by writing in journals. Results indicated that all three areas were successful.
