ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between acculturation, family support, and college achievement in the Latinx community. Despite increases in undergraduate degrees among Latinx students, master's and doctoral degrees are still low. Current research focuses on attaining and retaining undergraduate Latinx students. This study focuses on John Berry's acculturation theory, Latinx students and family support. Using in a correlational quantitative design, all participants for this study were of Latinx decent, at least 25 years of age, currently holding a bachelor's degree in any field or higher. The results of the study indicated that higher family support and acculturation levels were not necessary to attain a graduate degree. The findings in research did suggest that the undergraduate participants may be more influenced by their family. On the other hand, the graduate participants were not significantly motivated by acculturation or family support to pursue their higher degree. This research revealed that mentorship by professors or by those in the field of interest, played a key role in the students' academic desires. This study aims to raise awareness to academic institutions on how family dynamics affect enrollment and retention among the Latinx community. This study also aims to bring awareness to the parents on how current educational infrastructures work. By providing awareness to both parents and educational institutions, educators and parents can work together to build a foundation that will help the next generation succeed in obtaining a higher level of education.
