The Experiences of Academic Diversity Officers in Schools/Colleges
Sanchez-Parkinson, Laura; Grim, Jeffrey K.; Chavous, Tabbye; Ting, Marie
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (New York City, NY, Apr 13-17, 2018)
Institutions of higher education have responded to the current political landscape, changing demographics, and student activism around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by creating organizational structures and positions to coordinate DEI initiatives. The Academic Diversity Officer (ADO) position reports to an academic unit and coordinates a variety of DEI-related activities yet is under-researched. This grounded theory qualitative study used the interviews of fifteen ADO participants to investigate the skills and experiences necessary for organizational success. Findings from this study indicate ADOs should (a) have DEI competency, (b) gain legitimacy in their academic context, and (c) utilize interpersonal skills to build strategic relationships and trust. Implications for academic leaders, current and aspiring ADOs, and future research are discussed.
