When the Guidelines of Your Professional Association Conflict with Those of Your College, Whose Ethics Win?
Hill, Peter J.
Academe, v92 n1 p19-20 Jan-Feb 2006
In this brief article, the author discusses the question of the relationship between a professional academic association (in this case, the American Economic Association [AEA]) and members who teach at sectarian colleges. As a member of the American Economic Association and a faculty member at a Christian school (Wheaton College, Illinois), this author discovered that, although the AEA rules state that their members have a professional obligation to list their job openings on the Association's "Job Openings for Economists," the rules go on to state that "Listings that indicate discrimination on the basis of religion are not permitted even if the employer is eligible to discriminate on the basis of religion..." Wheaton College is an explicitly Christian school that is legally allowed to set religious standards as conditions of employment, and hires and retains only those who fully identify with its institutional faith commitment. The author contends that since the school is acting within its legal rights in demanding that its faculty adhere to a particular set of beliefs, the AEA should accept their job advertisements.
