Explored the relationship between youthful subculture attitudes toward hedonism, immediate gratification, and drug use in a longitudinal study of California youths (N=23 and N=72). Specific attitude measures indicated no relationship between degree of drug use and youth subculture attitudes. (JAC)

Gibbons, Stephen; And Others – Adolescence, 1986
Examined patterns of rural adolescent alcohol use and factors associated with such use. Found gender and grade in school to be significant predictors of alcohol use for age at first drink, frequency of drinking, amount of drinking, and a composite heavy drinking index. Trotter, Robert T., II – Adolescence, 1982
Surveyed alcohol use patterns among Mexican American (N=402) and Anglo American (N=116) college students. Results indicated significant differences in whether or not students drank, with whom they drank, how frequently, where, and what they drank. Found ethnicity had the strongest influence. (Author/RC)

Saucier, Jean-Francois; Ambert, Anne-Marie – Adolescence, 1983
Studied the risk-taking behavior (i.e., smoking, intemperate drinking, and failure to fasten seat belts) of 4,539 Canadian adolescents. Results showed adolescents who lived in intact families engaged in less health-risk behavior than adolescents from separated or divorced families. Results from widowed families were mixed. (JAC)
