This study examined the relationship between 20 hearing-impaired sixth and seventh grade students' ability to write syntactically correct sentences in two formats, one structured and one unstructured. Evaluation of the dialogue journals kept by 153 deaf students in pairs of deaf and hearing students (grades 4-12) in 10 public school districts found an improvement in the quality of the writing of the deaf students over time and changes in content and syntactic complexity. (DB)
