Five categories of activities for teaching the decimeter are discussed. Many of the activities can be modified in order to teach other metric units of length. (JT)

Directions are given for activities designed to help children realize that linear measurement is continuous, that it involves the repeated use of a unit in the same way each time, and that measurement is approximate. Non-standard units as well as standard units are included. (DT)

After studying the metric system, a fifth-grade class produced an assembly program to introduce the students in primary grades to metric measurements; they also compiled metric handbooks for other teachers in the school. (SD)

Many learning activities designed to make metric measurement meaningful to children are described. The manufacture and use of play dough is featured. Several simple recipes for preparing dough are included. (MP)

This report, approved by the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, recommends an activity-based approach to the teaching of the metric system, and lists basic objectives to be achieved by the end of grades 3, 6, and 9. (SD)
