Creating an Assessment Culture at Eastern Michigan University: A Decade of Progress
Bennion, Donald H.; Harris, Michael
Assessment Update, v17 n2 p7-9 Mar-Apr 2005
Fostering a culture of assessment is extremely challenging work. In this article, the authors show how Eastern Michigan University (EMU) has approached this challenge and how the authors' experience can help others who are struggling with the same issue. An effective and self-reinforcing assessment culture cannot be established overnight but requires a multifaceted approach and careful development to ensure ownership on the part of faculty, staff, and administrators. Here, the authors begin by discussing the context for assessment at EMU. Then they show how they have developed, stimulated, communicated about, documented, validated, and sustained assessment on the campus.
