Transforming the Assessment Culture through the Use of Assessment Specialists at a Regional University
Weiner, Charles S.; McMillan, Douglas N.
Assessment Update, v17 n6 p6-8 Nov-Dec 2005
In November 2003, Southeastern Oklahoma State University underwent a comprehensive reaccreditation visit conducted by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Throughout the visit, Southeastern was commended for the assessment culture that had been created on campus. The team concluded that "the faculty has made significant progress toward a culture of assessment and self-evaluation designed to optimize the learning environment" and "the University's faculty has demonstrated a level of commitment to the assessment of Student Learning in the Academic Major areas." This article describes how Southeastern effectively transformed their assessment culture through a group of assessment specialists formed in Fall 2001.
