Descriptors: Science Materials, Scientific Research, Supplies, Zoology
Peer reviewedSalisbury, Frank B. – BioScience, 1975
Reviews the interest of the last few years, both inside and outside the scientific community, in unidentified flying objects (UFO), placing special emphasis on the extraterrestrial intelligence hypothesis. Cites numerous examples of UFO sightings and urges that the investigation of UFO's proceed in a scientific manner, despite skeptical public…

Peer reviewedVitousek, Peter M.; Reiners, William A. – BioScience, 1975
A hypothesis is presented for the regulation of elemental losses from terrestrial ecosystems. Losses of elements are controlled by the net increment of biomass growth and the elemental composition of this net increment. According to this hypothesis, loss rates are highest in early succession and in steady state ecosystems. (Author/EB)

Peer reviewedGans, Carl; Mix, Harold – BioScience, 1974
Describes the construction and operation of an automatic insect dispenser suitable for feeding small vertebrates that are being maintained for behavioral experiments. The food morsels are squirted from their chambers an an air jet, and may be directed at a particluar portion of the cage or distributed to different areas. (JR)

Peer reviewedCarter, Jack L.; Mayer, William V. – BioScience, 1988
Describes how a list of the great books of biology was developed. Discusses the insufficiency of textbooks and traditional classroom instruction. Advocates the uses of outside reading and libraries. Focuses on books designed to be read, not studied for information and enjoyment. (CW)
Descriptors: Biological Sciences, Biology, Books, College Science
Peer reviewedBlystone, Robert V.; Barnard, Kimberly – BioScience, 1988
Examines college (introductory level) biology textbooks commonly used since 1950. Reports trends in new textbooks including length, graphics and content. Makes projections of future trends. Identifies major issues facing colleges related to biology textbook users. (CW)
